Dhaka North City Corporation’s former mayor Atiqul Islam was arrested from the capital’s Mohakhali DOHS area on Wednesday.

A team of detectives from Mohammadpur Police Station arrested him, confirmed Deputy Commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Talebur Rahman.

Three cases have been filed against him with the Mohammadpur Police Station.

Atiqul has been detained over allegations of playing a role in the Awami League-government backed killing spree of civilian protesters during July-August. Police would produce him before a Dhaka court Thursday to put him on remand.

Like most other Awami League leaders and activists, Atiqul went into hiding following the fall of the autocratic Awami League regime on 5 August.

He became the DNCC mayor for the first time in 2019, after winning by-polls on 28 February that year. He was reelected on 1 February the following year.
