Dhaka city Hefazat-e-Islam vice-president Maulana Jubayer Ahmed has been arrested by the Detective Branch from his Lalbagh residence on Friday afternoon.

DB's joint commissioner Mahbub Alam said Jubayer Ahmed was arrested on charges of his alleged involvement in Shapla Chattar violence on May 5, 2013.

The Hefazat leader is also involved in recent violent acts carried out by the organisation, said he said, adding that Jubayer Ahmed will be produced before a court with remand prayers on Saturday showing arrested in a case filed in 2013.

With Maulana Jubayer Ahmed, nine central leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam have so far been arrested.

Earlier, the DB arrested Hefazat central organising secretary Azizul Huque Islamabadi, assistant secretary general Sakhawat Hosayn Raji, central committee assistant secretary general Manjurul Islam and assistant-publicity secretary Mufti Sharifullah in Dhaka over last few days.

They were shown arrested in cases related to Shapla Chattar violence on May 5, 2013.
