On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Md. Aminul Islam, announced that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be the prime accused in the 2013 Shapla Chattar massacre case.

He stated that 90% of the investigation is complete, revealing direct involvement of top government officials in what he described as an intent to "eliminate" Hefazat-e-Islam. The prosecution has identified 58 victims across the country and plans to submit the final probe report to the Tribunal by June 7.

The case follows a recent complaint filed by Hefazat leader Azizul Haque Islamabadi, which names 54 individuals, including former ministers and high-ranking police officials.
